7. Overview of Door Signage Standards
Proper signage is critical for the safe operation of automatic doors. Signage and warnings for the ED100/ED250 operators are specified in accordance with American National Standards:
- ANSI/BHMA A156.10: Standard for power-operated pedestrian doors (referenced in Paragraph 11).
- ANSI/BHMA A156.19: Standard for power assist and low energy power-operated doors.
7.1 Full Energy Operator Signage
For full energy operators, signage placement depends on the traffic flow and approach direction.
7.1.1 Overview & Mounting Height
Standard mounting height for all identifying signs is 50" ± 12" from the floor to the centerline of the sign.
7.1.2 Door, One Way Traffic
A decal featuring an Arrow and the text "AUTOMATIC DOOR" must be visible from the approach side of a swinging door.
A decal with "DO NOT ENTER" and "AUTOMATIC DOOR" must be visible from the non-approach side of the door that swings towards pedestrians attempting to travel in the wrong direction. Solid doors may require separate decals.
7.1.3 Door, Two Way Traffic
- Approach Side: Must display an Arrow and "AUTOMATIC DOOR".
- Swing Side: Swinging doors serving both egress and ingress must display a "CAUTION AUTOMATIC DOOR" sign visible from the swing side.
7.1.4 Knowing Act Door
Doors activated by a user action (Knowing Act) require specific instruction decals:
- "ACTIVATE SWITCH TO OPERATE": Must be on the side of the door containing the activation switch or device.
7.2 Low Energy Operator Signage
Low energy operator signage must comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.19.
7.2.2 All Low Energy Doors
All low energy doors must be marked with signage visible from both sides of the door containing the words:
These signs must be mounted 50" ± 12" from the floor to the centerline of the sign.
7.2.3 Knowing Act Switch Activation
When a knowing act device is used to initiate operation, the door must be provided with a sign on each side where the switch is operated reading "ACTIVATE SWITCH TO OPERATE".
7.2.4 Push/Pull Initiation
When a push/pull action is used to initiate the door operator:
- Push Side: Must display "PUSH TO OPERATE".
- Pull Side: Must display "PULL TO OPERATE".
7.3 & 7.4 Single Swing Door Configurations
Specific placement guidelines for single swing doors based on energy type and traffic flow.
7.5, 7.6 & 7.7 Double Swing & Egress Configurations
Double swing doors and double egress doors have complex signage requirements to ensure safety in both directions.
7.5 Full Energy Double Swing Doors
Requires appropriate "AUTOMATIC DOOR" and "DO NOT ENTER" signage based on one-way or two-way traffic flow configurations.
7.6 Low Energy Double Swing Doors
Requirements include "AUTOMATIC CAUTION DOOR" on all panels visible from both sides. Knowing act devices or push/pull zones must be clearly labeled for each specific door leaf.
7.7 Full Energy Double Egress Swing Doors
Double egress doors (doors swinging in opposite directions) typically require:
- "AUTOMATIC DOOR" signage on approach sides.
- "DO NOT ENTER" signage on the swing side of the opposing door to prevent traffic collision.
