What happens to an automatic swing door when the power fails? With the integrated emergency power supply for the ED 100 and ED 250, the answer is: nothing changes. The operator keeps running in automatic mode — powered by a LiFePO4 battery pack hidden inside the standard 70 mm cover. This guide covers how it works, the two versions, installation dimensions and the battery technology behind it.
1. What the integrated emergency power supply does
- Maintains automatic operation in the event of a power failure — the door keeps opening and closing as usual
- Invisible design — the module integrates into the ED housing as an expandable module of the modular system
- Easier installation than an external 230 V UPS — no separate cabinet, no extra wiring route
- Retrofittable — can be added to existing ED operators, and is equally available for new installations
- 24-hour stand-by — ready to take over immediately when required
2. Versions and installation dimensions
| Set 01 — single-leaf door | Set 02 — double-leaf door | |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting position | attachment kit in the direction of the main closing edge, integrated in/on the standard cover (height 70 mm) | centrally under the Vario cover |
| Added length | 230 mm → new complete drive length 915 mm | — |
| Requirement | — | min. hinge distance 1,630 mm |
| Buffered cycles* | up to 600 cycles | up to 300 cycles |
*Depending on the application and connected hardware.
For new systems, installation of the emergency power supply occurs in the same step as the operator installation — no second visit, no extra mounting session.
3. Battery technology: LiFePO4
The battery pack uses rechargeable lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells, chosen over lithium-polymer for good reasons:
- High capacity and high energy density
- Long service life
- Thermal runaway is almost impossible — a significantly higher safety level compared to lithium-polymer batteries
- Cobalt-free — a more sustainable material choice
4. Compatibility restrictions to know before ordering
- Due to the design, simultaneous operation of the integrated emergency power supply with the integrated mechanical door coordinator (ED ESR Set) is currently not possible — on double-leaf fire doors you must choose one or the other.
- In Germany, the use of the integrated emergency power supply in combination with hold-open systems is currently not allowed.
5. Who needs this module?
- Hospitals, care homes, accessible entrances — the door must keep working for safe evacuation and barrier-free access during power outages
- Commercial buildings with access control — automatic operation continues even when the mains fail
- Retrofit projects — existing ED 100 / ED 250 installations can be upgraded without replacing the operator or the cover design
